In times of political turmoil and personal stress, or you know- life, it is way too easy to fall into patterns of fear and reactivity. I find myself quick to judge, quick to anger, and quick to retreat into what I already know. Yet, it is precisely during days like these that the virtue of gentle curiosity becomes a powerful tool.
Gentle curiosity is a way of being that invites exploration and embraces uncertainty. It is a willingness to ask questions, to listen deeply, and to approach the world with an open mind and a heart of compassion. Rather than seeking to confirm my biases or engage in intellectual combat, the practice of gentle curiosity invites me to step into the unknown and embrace the complexity of human experience.
In the midst of chaos, gentle curiosity allows me to peek behind labels and stereotypes, tempting though they are. I want to be a person who seeks understanding and recognizes the humanity of people who are wrong. I want to find common ground in unexpected places instead of retreating into what I already know. This is so very very hard.
I do not believe this is a time of simply differing opinions about things that have two equally compelling sides. I do not think that the value of some people should be up for a reasonable debate. That is not what I am talking about.
I am talking about not reducing the world to fit into my existing understanding.
And not just politics, I want you to be gently curious about your own sweet soul. I want you to be gently curious about this whole amazing world, the bees and the spiders, the rainbows and the black holes. When something pisses you off, get curious. When something makes you laugh, get curious. When something makes you cry or scream or go numb- ask ‘Why'?’
The toddler has not yet started asking why. He is still narrating the world (with embellishments- Papa's car does not actually have Christmas lights on nor has he ridden a train in the sky) But for the most part he is simply in awe of the world as it is. It is like living with a high needs meditation teacher. Soon I know he will be asking 'Why?' and it’s a damn good question.

When we approach our own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors with gentle curiosity, we create space for self-compassion and deeper understanding. We become more adept at navigating life's bullshit because we can explore our inner worlds with less judgment and self-criticism.
And so my loves, my dear ones
May you find a soft and quiet strength,
May gentle curiosity be a soothing balm on the wounds
that certainty has inflicted on you
May you question the world with an open heart
May you follow wonder like a lantern,
and may you delighted by the world you discover
And also in the spirit of curiosity- I am curious about what you would like to read more of in this little newsletter, that I tuck into a bottle and hurl out into the world each week.

I agree with Calista Welbaum, everything and anything that comes out of your uniquely magical and beautiful mind is a balm (or tickle!) to my soul. I look forward to the thoughtfully intricate woven texture of your words that never fail to deliver a singularly powerful message, worthy of time and consideration and sharing.
